Fire Alarms

Combating the threat of fire is of prime importance to minimize risk to personnel, products and buildings.

ACAM will recommend the most effective systems to prevent, detect and suppress fire, whether your requirements are relatively straightforward or require highly sensitive equipment to counter the problems posed by difficult environments such as those with restricted access, extreme temperatures, humidity or dirt, high ceilings or numerous aesthetic requirements.

Fire is among the most serious dangers we face. According to Home Office statistics, every year there are more than 100,000 fires in buildings, and around 600 people lose their lives. The suffering and financial losses are incalculable - reliable and effective fire protection is essential.

Practical Steps to Maintenance planning

  • Appoint a responsible person to attend to your fire procedures. This person will ensure the system is regularly tested, inspected and serviced and all events are recorded in the logbook.

  • Carry out a Risk Assessment. Every commercial organisation has a legal responsibility to carry out a fire risk assessment, even if a fire certificate has been issued. If you employ 5 persons or more, these findings must be recorded.

  • Consult with all interested parties. It is important that you consult with persons including your system supplier, fire officer, building controller and insurer over any aspect of change in building use or shape to ensure you will still be compliant with the Code.

  • Make sure all relevant personnel are trained in the everyday testing and use of the equipment. Don't forget, the fire detection and alarm system is your hardest working employee and could one day save a life or save your business - look after it.

  • Appoint a reputable company to provide servicing in accordance with BS 5893-1: 2002. The appointment of a reputable service organisation should consider an approved third party certification under LPS1014 or the BAFE SP203 schemes. This means they will fully support your system (irrespective of manufacturer or software protocol) by providing trained engineers, spares and fault finding and repair capabilities.

  • Under the changes to BS5839-1 , on appointment, the service company now has to carry out an initial inspection of the system to ascertain its condition and report on any major areas of non-compliance with the Code.

System inspection will cover the following areas:

  • Number of call points
  • Provision of fire detection
  • Sound pressure levels
  • Standby power supplies
  • Fire resistance of cabling
  • Fault monitoring of circuits
  • Standards of electrical safety
  • Incidence of false and unwanted alarms
  • Changes in use, layout or construction of the protected area that may impact on the effectiveness of the system

Smoke Vents are an ideal way to ensure in the event of fire, that smoke is quickly and efficiently dispersed.

Windows are fitted with electronic arms that automatically open in the event of smoke being detected. Smoke Vents are particularly suitable for large domestic dwellings for example.

Fire & Smoke Ventilation Systems

  • In smoke filled areas exits are hidden, people can be asphyxiated and fire fighting difficulties are increased
  • To extract smoke the simplest method is to vent through a window or rooflight etc. creating a chimney by means of a through draught
  • Actuators & systems available for all types of vents - top, bottom & side-hung windows, rooflights, fire flaps & louvres
  • Controls operate electronically
  • Can be utilized for day-to-day ventilation with automatic switching for all types of sensors with priority to fire & smoke
Sensa System Overview

Sensa is a conventional fire detection and alarm system operating over a 2-wire field wiring convention. Sensa incorporates enhanced safety, technical and practical features for the benefit of both the installer and the user.

Normal conventional 4-wire systems use 2 pairs of wires - 1 pair to connect detectors and call points and 1 pair to connect alarm devices such as sounders, bells and visual alarms.

The 2-wire convention uses a common pair for the connection of AlarmSense detectors, manual call points and alarm sounders. This gives the scheme designer a greater flexibility of choice, whilst retaining compliance with the relevant standards.

The 2-wire Sensa convention allows for significant cost savings due to reduced installation time.

Eurofire Sensa Panels

Eurofire Sensa panels are designed to comply with the European Standard EN54 Parts 2 to 4 and are suitable for BS 5839-1:2002 and B35839-6:2004 installations.

Panels are available in 4, 8, 12 or 16 zones of fire detection cover.

Each has a powerful and flexible system setup capability using a 4 x 20 character liquid crystal display (LCD).

AlarmSense Devices

AlarmSense fittings are a range of devices (detectors, manual call points, sounders, sounder beacons and alarm relays) designed to be connected onto the same pair of wires.

AlarmSense sounders and sounder beacon bases are switchable between 'priority' and 'non-priority' modes. A 'priority' set device reacts in the same way as a general device and causes a full alarm situation. However, a 'non-priority' set device gives an initial local alert prior to full alarm.

What is AlarmSense?

AlarmSense is a range of Apollo conventional fire detection and alarm products specially designed to be connected to the same pair of supply wires in a detection and alarm zone. The range comprises detectors, manual call points, sounders, sounder beacons and relay modules.

AlarmSense detectors and devices are powered and controlled by the Emergi-lite Eurofire or Firetec Sensa control and indicating equipment (CIE).

AlarmSense is acceptable for BS 5839-1:2002 and BS 5839-6:2004 systems and is therefore particularly suited for fire protection in 'dwellings and in houses of multiple occupation' (HMOs).

The purpose of Sensa system with Alarmsense

The Sensa system has been developed to make the task of designing and installing a fire detection and alarm system easier and more cost-effective for small to medium-sized buildings, with suitable flexibility for HMO applications.

In summary Sensa with AlarmSense is:

  • flexible
  • reliable
  • cost-effective
  • compliant with BS 5839, pats 1 and 6
  • easy to install
  • easy to extend
